Artistic Crosswalks & Street Murals
The Covina Town Center Specific Plan indicates that one of the goals for the district is to improve the conditions of their public realm and create “safe, accessible, and well-designed sidewalks and crosswalks” in order to have a properly activated district (City of Covina, 2019, p. 4-5). Asphalt art can be utilized to further develop Covina’s vision for a unique and vibrant arts district while improving connectivity. Street murals and designed crosswalks would be placed along arterials such as; the streets surrounding the health corridor, the civil and cultural core, and along the health plaza, according to what is stated in the plan (City of Covina, 2019, p. 4-6). Having art on the crosswalks, with vivid designs, not only brings the whole district together with art, but it also improves their visibility with drivers resulting in a safer experience for pedestrians.

The Walks of Life intersection mural was a multiple group collaboration with city officials, the Knights Foundation, and the Alexander Dreyfoos School of the Arts that lasted for three years in West Palm Beach, FL (Associates, 2019, pg. 17). This mural acted as a traffic calming mechanism for a very busy multi-modal route in the neighborhood where it was located. The purpose of this art installation was to “repurpose a neighborhood intersection as a community space” along with slowing motorists, improving overall street safety, and making it enticing for pedestrian commuters to walk to and from their destinations (Associates, 2019, pg. 17).
