About Us
The College of Environmental Design’s Urban and Regional Planning graduating class of 2021 engaged in a year-long course to dissect and understand the needs of a changing city. This studio course, Community Planning Studio, consisted of extensive research, careful analysis, and intense collaboration.

The focus of the study is on the F.A.I.R. District in the City of Covina Town Center Specific Plan (CTCSP). The class focused on four areas that would support the Specific Plan. The first task was to find a way to connect the newly proposed F.A.I.R. District to Covina’s surrounding downtown area. Though we propose several solutions, our main ideas are improved bike paths and wayfinding art. Our next area of focus is to find site interventions that would feature green infrastructure. Our large-scale intervention is the planting of shade trees around the city to mitigate the urban heat island effect and reduce air pollution. The smaller yet no less important intervention is bioswales. The planted water catch systems will reduce runoff as well as groundwater pollutant levels.

The class then had to find a way to implement both the connectivity and the site interventions. Our solution was to create a template for a nonprofit organization that would oversee our many recommendations. The organization, Prosper Covina, will oversee the implementation of our proposed programs, assuring smooth application. Lastly, creating events will attract the community to the district, like our Luma Festival, which showcases digital arts through interactive projections and dazzling light shows.
